'not just a slightly more difficult 'L' test. It is of an advanced nature and a very high standard of competence is required. You must show that you have a thorough knowledge of the principles of good driving and road safety and that you can apply them in practice'
When I teach, I teach people to drive the way I do. This means your learning goes beyond that of the standard 'L' test, and will at times be of an advanced nature. Not only will you be (by the time you take your test) a safe, confident driver, you will also follow the basic principles of 'Eco' driving, ensuring you drive with vehicle sympathy.
This test allows 3 attempts, if you fail 3 times you have to start the process from the start.
The final test is one of your ability to instruct
Almost anyone can drive well, but not every one can teach well. This test assesses your ability to teach. Again only 3 attempts are given after which the whole process must be started again.
The current pass rate for the whole ADI exam is around 33%, so you can see it a very tough exam.
Every 2 or 4 years driving instructors in Plymouth and otther parts of the country must undertake a 'check test'. This ensures standards are maintained.
This is graded on a 6 point scale grades 1-3 are inadequate and if an instructor is assessed at this level they will be given a short time to correct mistakes then re-assessed. If they still fail to make the grade, they may be removed from the register an no longer will be allowed to teach for money or monies worth.
Grade 4
is the basic acceptable grade giving a competent performance.
Grade 5 is a very good standard with only a few areas to work on.
Grade 6 is a very high standard and one to which all Driving instructor should strive.
I myself am a Grade 5. On my last check test I only missed out on a Grade 6 in one area (the examiner said I ask too many questions?)
Don't get too caught up in Grades, there are very good Grade 4 instructors, and I'm sure there are some not so good Grade 6 instructors. The key is to find someone you like to learn with, you'll be spending quite a bit of time together.
